5 things that happen in your first choir session
We are back! Mon and Tuesday nights are back to how they should be – singing!! We cant wait to get started learning new songs and performing them for you on our 10th year anniversary gig on 14th December!! Our free taster sessions for both Monday and Tuesday terms are however open and if you haven't sung since school (and sometimes come out in a cold sweat remembering assemblies spent singing 'He's Got the Whole World in His Hands'), yous may well retrieve that singing in a choir isn't for you lot. These early memories of out-of-tune school choirs, hymns and irksome, never-ending nursery rhymes may leave you common cold, simply joining a choir as an adult is a completely different feel. These are the five things anybody tin can expect from their first choir sessions…
1.
You'll consider running out screaming
Walking into a room of singers is daunting for anyone, but if it's been 10, 20, 30 years
since you last sang in public, joining a choir feels like a large step! You may consider
turning your automobile around and going dorsum home, or making an alibi about double-
booking yourself, or disarming yourself that you have a tickle of a sore throat coming
on, just the best thing you tin can do is go in and attempt information technology out. No matter how nervous yous feel,
99% of people come out of their first session beaming, and desperate to get home and
get practicing in the shower.
2.
You'll accept a modest panic trying to suss out which section you should be in
'Am I more of a Beyoncé or a Nina Simone? A Johnny Greenbacks or a Prince?'… in reality, the
outset session is a little bit of trial and error, and it's totally fine to switch sections if y'all're
struggling to striking the high notes or dipping your chin down into your cervix to force out the
low notes. If y'all're really not sure, only ask the choir leader when you get in, who will be
able to guide you towards the correct section.
3.
Yous'll have a laughing fit in the centre of the warm-ups
'Sister Susie sitting in a shoe polish shop, all mean solar day long she sits and shines, all day long
she shines and sits' is certainly a tongue twister – and never more than so than when yous're
trying to sing it for the kickoff time when you're warming up your voice. These won't be the
boring scales y'all did at school – await witty ditties and fun wordplay to go your natural language,
jaw and song muscles ready for singing.
four.
Your eyes will light upwards when you detect out what you're singing
At that place are choirs catering to every musical gustatory modality these days. You lot may find that you're
belting out a stone classic, getting seriously soulful or hollering your way through a peppy
pop song. Cull a choir that covers musical styles you similar, and the whole thing will
become so much more fun. You might sing quondam favourites or exist introduced to new tunes,
only either way y'all're guaranteed to accept a lot of fun.
v.
You'll realise that possibly, but maybe… yous tin can sing!
By the finish of your first choir session, something strange will happen. Every bit y'all're walking
down the road, you lot'll absent-mindedly start singing your harmony… and it will actually
sound alright? As SOTC's choir leader Vanessa always says, if yous can cry, you can
sing, and joining a choir gives yous the confidence to discover your voice. Nobody will be
perfect when they start, but information technology's a HUGE boost to learn that you don't audio like a
strangled cat – and you'll simply improve with each session!
They're getting closer……
